LYMPHO NEWS

Dear friends,

Happy New Year from all of us here at the ILF. We are looking forward in 2024 to continuing to work with our National Frameworks to improve the management of lymphoedema and related conditions worldwide.

Many countries have ongoing projects, such as Uganda, where the Limprint study is underway and has received interest at government level; India, where a Gates Grant is supporting their research; and Denmark, who received a grant to investigate lymphoedema among Danish children.

The ILF continues to grow and we are delighted to welcome Qatar to our community and look forward to working with them.

With World Lymphoedema Day approaching in March, we would love to hear how you plan to celebrate. So, please do share your news.

With best wishes from
Christine Moffatt CBE and the ILF Board of Directors

Costs cut for lymphoedema patients with Schakowsky-Carter Law

From the beginning of January 2024, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) implemented a rule to allow Medicare Part B coverage of doctor-prescribed compression garments. This rule was made possible by the passage of the Lymphedema Treatment Act, authored by U.S. Representatives Jan Schakowsky and Earl L ‘Buddy’ Carter, which finally amended the Medicare statute to allow for coverage of compression supplies.

As Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky said:

For years, I heard from friends and constituents suffering from lymphedema about the high-out of pocket costs for compression garment, the only remedy for this debilitating condition. Cost should never be a barrier to care. I am glad to see that Medicare Part B will now cover these compression garments and related accessories for patients diagnosed with lymphedema. This would not have been possible without the tireless work of advocates who helped push this bill over the finish line.
